James A. Hamilton

ELKHART — James A. Hamilton, 82, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully Thursday evening, Sept. 21, 2017 at his home.

He was born on Dec. 12, 1934 in Walker County, Alabama to the late John H. and Gertrude (Swafford) Hamilton. He married Rose Marie Long on Aug. 16, 1958; Rose died Oct. 17, 1995. He married Joan C. Morgan on Nov. 22, 2000.

Joan survives, also a daughter, Caroline Hamilton of Austin, Texas; step-son Matthew (Becky) Morgan of Elkhart; two step grandsons, Joshua and Andrew Morgan and a sister Anne (Hershel) Brown of Jasper, Alabama.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister Carrie Anton and brother William Hamilton.

James retired from the Elkhart Police Department after 20 years of service on Aug. 1, 1987, with the rank of detective sergeant. He formerly worked at Excel Corp.

James was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing and telling stories.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 until his honorable discharge in 1956.

All services for James will be private. He will be buried with military honors at Prairie Street Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the charity of your choice. Arrangements are under the care of Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart.
