Virginia B. Cordell, 99, formerly of Elkhart and Goshen, died Sunday, January 29 in Miller’s Merry Manor nursing home in Walkerton, where she had lived since 2015.
Virginia was born, December 4, 1923. Her parents were Mervin and Lorene (Frailey) Truex. She married to Delbert Cordell in 1943; their marriage was for 68 years. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers: Wayne, Glen, Donald, and Rev. Walter Truex and two sisters: Joyce Miers and Lois Messick.
Surviving are two sons: Michael (Carol) Cordell of Houston, TX, Timothy (Rosanne) Cordell of South Bend, IN; four grandchildren: Brent Cordell of Houston, TX, Alicia Boykin of Houston, TX, Alison (Chris) Glenn of South Bend, IN, and Mary (Ashlee) Jackson of Walkerton, IN; one step grandson: Dr. Jeffrey (Jacquie) Nelson of Hobbs, NM; twelve great-grandchildren; one step great-grandchild and one great-great-grandchild. Surviving also are one sister: Betty Sims of Kingman, AZ; and one brother: Buehl “Sonny” Truex of Henderson, NV.
Virginia resided in Elkhart most of her life and then lived in Goshen for eight years before moving to Walkerton. She retired from NBT Bank and attended First Church of God most of her life and then went to Koontz Lake Missionary Church in Walkerton. She enjoyed corresponding with friends and family, floral arranging and reading. Also, with her husband, she spent some time in winters in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas.
Visitation will be held Thursday, February 2, 2023, from 10 to 11 AM at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St, Elkhart, IN 46514, followed by a funeral service at 11 AM with Pastor Brian Baughman officiating. Burial will immediately follow services at California Road Cemetery.
