Valerie K. “Kay” Rines, 75, of Elkhart, passed away Friday evening, July 23, 2021, at her home, in the comfort and care of her family. A native of Elkhart, Kay was born on March 5, 1946, the daughter of the late John and Bernadine (Davis) Austin. Kay met her husband Bradly Rines, while they both were working at the Sarasota newspaper. They were married on June 9, 1967, in Sarasota. Surviving is her husband of 54 years, Brad Rines; son Timothy (Tonya) Rines, daughter Denise (Lester) Cornelison II; also 3 grandchildren, Krista Rines, Connor and Gavin Cornelison and 3 great grandchildren Serenity, Sophie and Decoda Rines; as well as her brother John (Rhonda) Austin; and sisters Nancy Rinker, Jean (Michael) Elder and Jackie (Stan) Treadway.
Kay was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to many. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church. Kay loved to cook, enjoyed gardening and flowers, working on crafts, and sewing. In the last few years, she has made many quilts as gifts for her family to enjoy.
Services celebrating Kay’s life will begin at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, 2021, at Northside Baptist Church, Pastor Carl Henry will officiate. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. at the church. Per her wishes, cremation will follow, with burial at a later date in Rice Cemetery.
