Richard "Rich" Schoon Life Story

Richard “Rich” W. Schoon, 68, of Elkhart, passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at his home.

Rich was born to the late Kenneth and Maggie (Richardson) Schoon in South Bend, IN.

He is survived by his son, Tom (Katie Palumbo) Schoon of Chicago, IL; brother, Ken (Sue) Schoon of Leesburg, FL; sister, Sue Myer of Mishawaka; nieces, Carlie, Rachal, Dawn, and Andie; four grandnephews and four grandnieces; other close family, Nancy Kujawa and Nick Kujawa; and many dear friends and neighbors.

Rich spent his career in the plastic injection molding industry and later volunteered at The Lerner Theatre in Elkhart.

As a sports enthusiast, Rich was influential in his son’s passion for tennis and baseball, teaching his son the love of the game and growing their bond over the years. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed father-son fishing and camping trips. Other passions included participating in local softball leagues; following baseball, and his favorite team, The New York Yankees; NHRA drag racing; classic cars, including his prized Bright Red 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1; and classic rock, especially The Rolling Stones.

Most of all, Rich will be remembered as a proud father, a loyal friend, a kind neighbor, and for having a great sense of humor.

There will be a celebration of life with close family and friends at a later date. Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart is assisting the family.

Rich cherished his rescue dog, Cleo. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to her rescue, Smiggi’s Safe Haven & Sanctuary, 23844 Marcellus Hwy., Dowagiac, MI 49047 or https://www.paypal.com/donate/?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=8X94C5GPW2PP4&source=url
