Pamela Johnson Life Story

Mrs. Pamela Jean “Pam” Johnson, 69, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at 4:30 am at her home with her family at her side. With what turned out to be a beautiful, lasting relationship with her Lord, she is finally Home and at her Savior’s side following a lifelong personal battle with Myotonic Dystrophy. She was born on July 19, 1952 in Elkhart to the late Norma Jean (Miller) Hostetler and Robert Hostetler, Sr., who survives Pam in Edwardsburg, Michigan. On June 7, 1975, she married Gerald W. “Jerry” Johnson in Elkhart and he survives her at home.

Also surviving Pam are her children Aaron (Layna) and Amy Johnson, both of Elkhart; brothers Bob (April) Hostetler of Elkhart and Quint Hostetler of Union, Michigan; her sister Cheryl (Ken) Bontrager of Elkhart and a granddaughter, Alaya Johnson. Besides her mother, Pam is preceded in death by a son, Jacob.

Cremation is to take place with the assistance of Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart. No immediate services have been planned at this time.

As mentioned earlier, Pam endured a lifelong illness, but she did not let her health issues dictate how she lived her life. Resourceful and proud, Pam soon found that her Christian beliefs were exactly what she needed to give her direction and happiness. She read and studied her Bible often and thrived in the strength and comfort that the Scriptures brought her. She grew up in the Baptist Church, and although her limited mobility made it difficult for her to attend, she remained faithful to her beliefs.

Pam was also very close to her family and cherished any opportunity that gave her reason to spend time with them, especially her granddaughter Alaya. She enjoyed cooking as well and loved trying out new recipes. There always seems to be a bit of a “mystery” factor when trying to make new dishes, and we can only guess that dinners were never boring at the Johnson household! Finally, she had a unique collection of tiny, decorative shoes that she was quite proud of.
