Norma Jean Royer, 79, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, August 24, 2023. She was born on October 26, 1943, in Elkhart to the late Frank and Helen (Fortino) DelRegno.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Royer, who passed away in 2021 and Richard “Dick” Birr, who passed away in 1988; siblings, Theresa Schieber, Michael DelRegno, Rosemary DelRegno, Violet Ferendez, and Geraldine Schluder; and son-in-law, Ed De Laurelle.
Norma is survived by her daughters, Deb (Randy) Miller of Brookston, IN, Teri Polston of Parrish, FL and Gina (DJ Anglemyer) Birr of Elkhart; step-children Mike Birr, Michelle Pittenger, Melinda (Jim) Rieth and Gary Royer Sr.; the one and only granddaughter and princess Giana “Gigi” Anglemyer; grandsons, Nick (Jamie) Lemasters, Steve (Andrea) Lemasters, Alex Polston, Mitch (Lindsay Fromm) Polston, Joel Anglemyer and Brady Anglemyer; great-grandchildren, Christian and Harrison Lemasters and Roxanne Brock; godchildren, Cheryl Stamp, Ruth Nihart, Rick Shake and Helen Vidmar; brother-in-law, Richard Schieber; cousin, Sandy Shake, with whom she shared a special sister-like bond and many nieces/nephews and great nieces/nephews.
Norma was a loving, caring, and witty woman who was unapologetically herself. She was a homemaker for most of her life and worked at Elkhart General Hospital. She was a member of the Women of the Moose #73, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and was a volunteer EMT for Porter Township. Above all else, Norma enjoyed being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was one of those larger than life people who continually put the needs of others before her own. Her warm sense of humor and her upfront attitude will be missed by all who knew her.
She was fiercely loyal to her family and always made sure they knew how much she loved them-especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were her whole world. She would make it a point to attend sporting events and was their biggest fan. Norma was entertained daily by her youngest grandchildren, Gigi, Joel and Brady, whom she lived with. Whether it be board games or cheerleading routines, there were many laughs to be had by all. Norma was the life of the party and was the best euchre partner to have. She was a phenomenal cook and was the best meatball maker around. She will be greatly missed by her loving family and many friends.
In accordance with Norma’s wishes, cremation was chosen and will take place at Billings Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Saturday, September 9, 2023 from 10-11am at St. Thomas of the Apostle Catholic Church, 1405 North Main St., Elkhart, IN 46514, with a Mass to follow at 11 am. A graveside service will take place immediately after the Mass at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Cemetery. Flowers and memorial donations may be sent to the church.
