Mikel "Mike" K. Mitchell

Mikel Kent “Mike” Mitchell, 73, passed away Monday, April 24, 2023 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka. Mike, as he was known to family and friends, was born on July 18, 1949 in Plymouth, Indiana to the late Robert L. Mitchell & Betty J. (Brown) Fairchild. Mike is survived by his two daughters Sarah E. (Kurt) Burns and Emily J. (Adam) Kreutner; three grandchildren, Kai Kreutner, Jordan Burns, Riordan (Bianca) Burns; two sisters, Debra (Pete) Gustafson, Mary Wilkinson; four brothers John “Jay” Mitchell, Jim Fairchild, Dave (Lori) Fairchild, Steve (Micky) Fairchild; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mike graduated in 1967 from Plymouth High School, and his BA in History in 1971 from Ball State University. He earned his MBA from Indiana University South Bend in 1984.

Mike worked in the banking sector for most of his career as a loan officer and manager for several banks including Citizens Northern Bank in Elkhart. He also was a substitute teacher for the School City of Mishawaka and worked with the U.S. Census Bureau in our area. Mike was a man of deep faith and a very active member of Crest Manor Church of the Brethren in South Bend.  Mike loved to play golf, was a voracious reader and enjoyed finding out about his family ancestry.

Per Mike’s wishes, cremation was chosen. Services celebrating the life of Mikel K. Mitchell will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Crest Manor Church of the Brethren, 1342 Berkshire Dr. South Bend, IN. Pastor Gary Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth. In lieu of flowers, Mike's family kindly request memorials may be made to the church.
