Michael McCavitt, Sr. Life Story

Mr. Michael Allen McCavitt, Sr., 82, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully of natural causes on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at 8:10 am in the comfort of the home he and his loving wife, Tressie, built together decades ago.

He was born on July 11, 1941 in Elkhart to the late Clifford and Geraldine (Southworth) McCavitt and was the faithful and doting husband of Tressie L. (Overton) McCavitt, whom he married in Goshen in 1960. She survives Mike at home.

Also surviving are Mike’s children Michael A. (Bonnie) McCavitt, Jr. of Elkhart and Leah E. (Richard) Dieffenderfer of Jones, Michigan; sisters Yvonne “Betty” Irelan and Candice “Candy” (Jim) Grove, both of Goshen; grandchildren Crystal A. (Luke) Fountain of Elkhart, Travis W. (Nicole) McCavitt of Granger, Joseph M. McCavitt of Elkhart and Carlos T. Ortiz of Michigan City; great grandchildren Brionna, Zackary, Cody, Zoie, Nicholas, Zandra, Alexander, Graysen and Embry, as well as a host of loving extended family, friends and neighbors, including his very good friend JR Brown of Bristol, TN. Preceding Mike in death are his brothers Clifford, Richard, James and Jerry McCavitt, sister Jackie Hibshman and great-grandson Jaylen Ortiz .

Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart will host Mike’s homegoing services on Saturday, February 3, 2024, beginning with a visitation at 11:00 am followed by the service at 1:00 pm. Pastor Justin Moore of Elkhart’s “That Church on the Rise” will officiate and, in accordance with Mike’s wishes, cremation will follow the services.

Mike was very talented with his hands and spent most of his life either constructing, finishing, pouring, laying or building things including his own home, of which he was very proud. He held a journeyman’s rating in tile flooring and did a lot of sub-contracting work in floor coverings.

But Mike was better defined not by what he was, but by who he was, which was a loving prankster who placed his family above everything. His sense of humor was always well timed and “mostly” appreciated, and it always kept a smile on everyone’s face. He loved camping, especially when the kids were still young, and everyone still remembers a whole group of friends and their families caravaning to Florida in converted school buses every year. Mike was also an avid fisherman, and whether it was Crappie fishing in Florida or heading for deep water on Lake Michigan on his son Mike Jr.’s competition fishing boat “Open Water”, Mike always enjoyed the friendly conversations and good times to be had on each and every fishing trip he went on.

Mike went on to winter in Sebring, Florida each year, but always faithfully returned to Elkhart to tend to domestic issues. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and attended That Church on the Rise in Elkhart, where his devotion to his Lord manifested itself in Mike volunteering to lay an entire gym floor for the church at no charge, with the help of his buddy, JR Brown.

All in all, it was the simple things that made Mike the happiest; whether it be a family get together, a crackling campfire, a sharp tug on his fishing line or just a simple belly laugh, Mike knew the value of a happy life and did what he could to maintain that inner peace for everyone.

Memorial donations may be made in Mike’s memory to the Center for hospice care in Elkhart.
