Matthew D. “Matt” Rentfrow, 34, of Edwardsburg, MI, passed away following a courageous battle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder at Lakeland Hospital in Niles on Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2018 at 11:17 am. In accordance with his wishes, his final act of compassion was to be a donor of life.
He was born in Three Rivers on Sept. 6, 1983 to Dennis Rentfrow and Marcy (James) Glessner Hendress, who survive him, and later married Alexandria “Ally” Porter in January 2014. She survives him as well.
Also surviving are his children Brock, Isabella and Kinley Rentfrow and Taelyn Bingaman; siblings Kristina (William) Harshberger, Michael (Kathryn) Rentfrow and Rebecca Rentfrow; grandmothers Evelyn Glessner and Louise Albin; former spouse Jennifer Rentfrow, who is the mother of Brock and Isabella; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. He is preceded in death by his grandfathers.
Matt’s life will be celebrated on Monday, Aug. 20, 2018 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at Faith United Methodist Church, 22045 CR 18, Goshen, where services will follow on Tuesday at 11:00 am. The Rev. John Hogsett will officiate and military honors will be graciously rendered at the church following the service by several military and USMC organizations, including the USMC Funeral Honor Guard, the Northern Indiana Patriot Guard, the Elkhart Marine Corps League, Detachment #1397 and the Blue Star Mother’s Society. Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart has been assisting the family with arrangements.
Matt served honorably for nearly ten years as a United States Marine, including deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, where he served as a staff sergeant with the Marine 2nd EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) Company. However, it is important to mention that Matt was a loving father, son and husband, and wanted to be remembered for being more than just a good Marine. He doted over his children, and enjoyed hunting and working on his car, trucks and Harley in his spare time. He had worked several years as a maintenance supervisor for Anco Products, Inc. and Indratech of Elkhart, but had recently taken a position as an IBEW certified electrical apprentice for Service One. He also held a certification in Mechatronics from Southwestern Michigan College
Memorial donations can be given to the EOD Warrior Foundation or to his children, c/o their grandmother, Marcy Hendress.
