Mary Earnhart Life Story

Mary L. (Warner) Earnhart, 90, of Elkhart, passed away on Friday, February 2, 2024, at Elkhart General Hospital. She was born on January 27, 1934, in Elkhart, to the late Robert “Bob” and Flossie Marie (Holdeman) Warner. On November 15, 1958, she married the love of her life, Frederick C. “Fred” Earnhart, in Three Rivers, MI. He passed away on April 9, 2008, after 49 wonderful years together.

Mary is survived by her children, David B. Earnhart, Chris S. (Tag) Earnhart, and Tamara L. Weidner; daughter-in-law, Dusty Earnhart; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; sister, Janet (Harley) Henson; and a loving host of extended family, friends, and acquaintances.

In addition to her loving husband and parents, Mary was preceded in death by her son, Douglas K. “Doug” Earnhart; grandson, Zachary Thomas Earnhart; and brothers, Terry, Bobby, and Gene Warner.

Services for Mary will be held on Friday, February 9, 2024, at Billings Funeral Home with visitation from 11 AM to 1 PM and a funeral service beginning at 1 PM. Burial and graveside services will immediately follow at Prairie Street Cemetery. Pastor Frank Ramirez of Union Center Church of the Brethren in Nappanee will officiate.

Mary was a longtime active member of the Elkhart Valley Church of the Brethren, having been a librarian, council member, and all around helper for many years. She was proud of her faith and adored being able to be in the company of others sharing her faith.

Mary enjoyed raising her children and helping care for future generations of her family for many years. In her spare time, she loved to bake cookies, whether it be to try out a new recipe or to make someone smile. Mary could also be found reading a mystery romance novel, completing her beloved word puzzles, or sewing and creating doll clothing, costumes, and more.

In more recent years, Mary found that she loved spending time on the computer playing games or researching. When computers were moving onto the scene, she enrolled herself in a computer course for seniors and taught her husband, Fred, what she had learned. Moreso, at 80 years old, she proudly changed the hard drive on her computer with the help of her son, Chris, over the phone.

Mary will best be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, who had a kind, gentle soul, and was baker of the perfect chocolate chip cookie. She held a wicked sense of humor, had a mind as sharp as a tack, and ultimately was the true definition of a survivor after all she had been through. Mary, along with all the love and joy she shared, will be dearly missed by those whose hearts she touched throughout her life.
