Life Story

Lyman A. “Sonny” Weber-Enyart, 77, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Friday, March 24, 2023, at Majestic Healthcare in Goshen following a life-long battle with extended service-related health issues, including exposure to Agent Orange. He was born on May 21, 1945, in Logansport to the late Arthur Dean Weber and Edna Mae (Bixler) Weber-Enyart. Sonny’s dad Arthur passed at an early age, and he was then lovingly raised by his step-father, Kenneth Enyart, who also precedes Sonny in death. It was Edna Mae who named her beautiful baby boy “Sonny” because of his sunny disposition and smile.

Surviving Sonny are his loving and devoted children; sons Christopher (Carrie) Weber of Edwardsburg, Michigan, Jason (Kristen Hower) Weber of Mishawaka and Michael (Gena) Weber of Bristol; his daughter Jennifer (Randy) Fiscus of Chesterton; sisters Barbara Veloz of Three Rivers, Michigan and Joyce Cantrell of Elkhart; 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren with two more on the way!! Along with his parents and step-father, Sonny is preceded in passing by his favorite doggo Coco, who went to her grave swearing that she was a stunt double for Toto on the Wizard of Oz.

Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart are honored to be hosting Sonny’s Homegoing Celebration beginning with a visitation and viewing at 12:00 noon followed by his life celebration at 1:00 pm. Elder Karen Blake of the New Testament Bible Church of Elkhart will officiate and, in accordance with Sonny’s wishes, cremation will follow the services. Military Honors will be rendered by the US Army Funeral Honor Guard and the Elkhart Veteran’s Honor Guard at the funeral home precisely at 1 pm, leading off the service.

After Sonny graduated Bristol High School, he entered into the United States Army in 1963. He was sent to Vietnam where he served proudly in an artillery battalion. Unfortunately, while deployed he was exposed to the experimental defoliant “Agent Orange”, which affected his health the rest of his life. True to character, Sonny was never bitter about his time in the Army and was always proud of his military service. He left the Army in 1965.

After returning home, fate eventually smiled on Sonny as he became affiliated with ADEC Adult Services in Bristol, eventually becoming a senior group home supervisor. Sonny loved his job, but more than that he loved the folks he worked with and developed wonderful friendships with those residents whom he cared for. He faithfully remained loyal to the people there until his health issues made it too difficult to work.

It should probably go without saying that Sonny was a prankster, and his quirky and consistent sense of humor endeared him to many. In fact, it makes sense that his funeral is on April Fool’s Day!  Growing up, all Sonny really had to listen to was Elvis Presley and Paul Anka so he developed a real taste for Elvis’ music. BUT…along with that, Sonny also masterfully developed the King’s signature lip snarl, hip thrust and knee jerk, and always had everyone laughing whenever Elvis came on. He was rumored to do a pretty good Paul Anka too, and many said that Sonny actually did have a pretty good singing voice.

It should ALSO go without saying that Sonny loved visiting Indiana Lake, as it served as Sonny’s spot of mental tranquility; his “zen” if you will. He loved walking its shores and just enjoying the magnificent natural beauty offered by the area. He was also a huge sand and beach nut too, and loved to take the family to Silver Beach up in Michigan for a weekend whenever he could.

Sonny was a Gangster and Mobster Movie aficionado (some say his spaghetti sauce recipe came from the prison scene in “Goodfellas”), he enjoyed watching history documentaries, liked to visit the casinos and was an old, classic car lover.

Finally, we feel it necessary to mention the importance of Sonny’s Christian faith throughout his life, as he firmly believed that it was Christ who carried him during his most difficult moments. In fact, Sonny was working on a Christian based book which he was very near to finishing prior to his passing. In it,  Sonny explains how he was able to depend on God to provide at his most darkest of times, and that anyone can achieve this if they simply believe. We certainly do, Sonny.

Friends and family may leave memories, condolences and pictures on Sonny’s obit page on the Billings Funeral Home website. Thank you for your interest in his life story!
