Life Story

Lila June (Johnson) Chaney, 68, of Cassopolis, MI, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 14, 2022, at her home. Lila was born on March 19, 1954, in Hyden, KY, to the late Pearl and Juanita (McAllister) Johnson.

Lila is survived by her children, Freda (Jorge Ortiz), Gail, and Shawn Johnson; nieces and nephews who were like her children, Ray and James Begley, and Ronda Purdon; grandchildren, Ashley, Tylie (Kyle), Kierstin, Precious, Patiance (John), and Areea; great-grandchildren, Perseus, Braylan, Oliver, Brynlee, Greyson, and one on the way; former spouse and life long friend, Dean Chaney; and siblings, Leslie, Robert (Nadine), and Kelly Johnson, and Freda (Jim) Kletsch.

Lila is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Shirley Johnson; and grandson, Skyler Johnson.

In accordance with Lila’s wishes, a private burial will take place at Kessington Cemetery in Edwardsburg, MI. Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart is assisting the family with arrangements.

Family was everything to Lila. She loved her family with her whole heart, particularly her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought her so much happiness, calling them her ‘blessings’. She was a loving and conservative mother, who in her younger years enjoyed pulling fun pranks on others and having get-togethers, notably being deemed the ‘life of the party’.

Lila was also known for her excellent cooking skills, whipping up her famous potato salad, fried chicken, and fried potatoes for those she loved. Once in a while, she liked to visit casinos and knick-knack shops when she could. Lila will be dearly missed.
