Kathryn Steckly Life Story

GOSHEN — Kathryn M. Steckly, 93, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2018 at Greencroft Healthcare in Goshen.

Kathryn was born on Jan. 28, 1924 in Kalona, Iowa to Enos J. and Amy L. (Hershberger) Steckly.

She is preceded in death by her sister Lois (Steckly ) Miller; a nephew Warren Miller; and two brother-in-laws Marlin Stutzman and Willis Miller.

She is survived by a sister Glennis (Steckly) Stutzman of Wellman, Iowa; and a sister Magdalene (Steckly) and Paul Yoder of Eugene, Oregon. She is also survived by five nephews, six nieces, and 17 great nieces and nephews.

Although her family was scattered across the United States she loved her family, and every moment with them.

Kathryn was a beloved member of Southside Fellowship Mennonite Church, in Elkhart, since 1974 and leaves behind a family in faith that will cherish her memory.

Kathryn worked for a variety of businesses doing bookkeeping and administrative duties in places like Colorado Springs, and Wellman, Iowa.

She was well known to many through her nine years working for Hesston College, Hesston, Kansas. She worked for Menno Travel in Ephrata, Pennyslvania and had especially fond memories of the years she spent in Nairobi, Kenya working for them.

As a girl she dreamed of traveling, and realized that dream as an adult. She ended her career working for Oaklawn in Elkhart, and had fun working part-time in retirement for Dick Lehman Pottery.

Kathryn gave of her time in the Elkhart schools helping children learn to read. She served as a volunteer for God’s Eye Art and valued her friendship with the artist Chad Friesen.

Kathryn loved flowers, and they loved her back. She grew beautiful flowers.

Kathryn also loved people, and they loved her back. She grew beautiful friendships over the many years of her life.

A memorial service celebrating Kathryn’s life will be held on Feb. 10, 2018 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of the Sermon on the Mount, 3003 Benham, Ave, Elkhart. Pastor David Moser will officiate.

Memorials are kindly requested for Mennonite Central Committee or the Greencroft Foundation.
