June Nihart Life Story

June Ecloise Nihart, 95, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at the Center for Hospice Care in Elkhart on April 2, 2024 at 8:23 am while convalescing from an extended illness. She was born in Elkhart on March 2, 1929 to the late Harold and Ecloise (Schowler) Swinehart, and later married Carlyle Nihart on August 20, 1949 in Osceola. Along with her parents, June is also preceded in death by her husband Carlyle, who passed in Elkhart in 2007 and a brother, Charles Emerson Swinehart.

June is survived by her sons Jeffrey (Linda Jeffers) Nihart of Elkhart, Mitchell “Mitch” Nihart and his canine companion Sheamus of Mottville, Michigan, and Stuart (Ruth Preston) Nihart of Constantine, Michigan; a half brother Phillip Swinehart of the Edwardsburg, Michigan area; a half sister Lorinda Dibble of Elkhart; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

In accordance with her wishes, June has been cremated with the assistance of Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart. The family is planning a Celebration of Life for this summer.

June was a 1947 graduate of Jimtown high school and was an ardent lifelong supporter of the Jimmies. Following high school she worked at the Indiana Toll Road Plaza, back in the early days when interstate travel was romantic and exciting. After that she was employed at CTS as a precious metals connections assembler, and stayed there for 35 years. She loved her time at CTS and maintained lifelong friendships with coworkers along with her former classmates.

Along with raising three sons and traveling to see them as adults at various military bases during their careers, June enjoyed life, relishing each day with her own independent spark and passion. June loved art, music, and dancing. She was an amazing euchre player and enjoyed teaching her grandchildren to play. She visited the library regularly and would check out framed artwork as well as books. She explored her artistic side in oil and watercolor painting.  She loved jazz and all types of music, and especially going to hear live music and dancing.

June had also been an active member of the local PT Cruiser club, which made appearances at local parades and car rallies as well as going on road trips (“cruises”). She was a wonderfully artistic and spirited woman, and she loved meeting new people.
