John “Johnny” Everett Purvis, 82, of Elkhart, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday afternoon, November 15, 2020 at his home.

Johnny is survived by his wife of 58 years, Martha; 3 beautiful children, Chris Purvis of Elkhart, Connie (David) Ritchie of Goshen and Stephanie (Mike) Smolinski of Elkhart; grandchildren, Mandy Purvis, Cody Purvis, Katy (John) Stearnes, Brooke Ritchie, Jesse Smolinski, Alyssa Ritchie and Riley Smolinski; brothers and sister, James Norman Purvis of Elkhart, William “Billy” Morton Purvis of Sharpsburg, KY, Nancy Van Order of Nappanee, and Barbara Lynn Porter of Lexington, KY.

Johnny’s family were farmers and grew tobacco. He was a country boy at heart…always. In 1960, he made his way with his brother to Elkhart for work and business opportunities. He met Martha F. Smith on a blind date and married on September 21, 1962. Johnny was a union roofing foreman with Slatile Roofing and Sheet metal and City Roofing in Elkhart. He spent most of his time listening to country music. Johnny enjoyed the holiday season particularly Thanksgiving and Christmas. Johnny loved tinkering with his prized 1950 International red truck. He also frequently went to garage sales and auctions. Johnny also enjoyed building and creating things in his workshop, gardening and working in the yard. He always provided for his family. Johnny took great pride in being a simple man and will be remembered for his independent spirit. He was known as the “go to” person. Johnny also took great joy in spending time with his family and friends, watching ball games and took a liking to his granddaughters, sugar gliders.
