Life Story

Mr. Joel Stephen Jernigan, 33, of Elkhart, passed away Saturday, April 9, 2022 at 12:04 am at his home, putting to rest an extended battle with his personal demons. He was born on January 21, 1989 in South Bend to the late Darlene M. (Kerns) Jernigan and Mr. Jeffrey A. Jernigan who survives him in Elkhart.

Surviving Joel is his son, Havoc Osiris Jernigan, who resides with his mother Brittney Shaffer of Elkhart; his brother Jeffrey A. Jernigan, Jr., also of Elkhart; sisters Kala McFadden of Argos and Trenda McFadden of Georgia. Cousins Thomas Kerns and Mickey McKay also survive along with a very large group of loving extended family, close friends, work buddies and “brothers from other mothers”. He also had this thing for a little cat named Voodoo that he originally got for Havoc, but she kind of grew on him and soon he and his “baby girl” became inseparable.

Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart is hosting a memorial gathering of family and friends at their facility on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 from 3-5 pm. While no formal services are taking place, friends coming to pay their respects are encouraged to share their stories and memories of Joel with his family.

Joel had been working as a group leader with Forest River here in the Elkhart area for over 10 years. While Joel had been in the RV business for most of his adult life, his real joy was derived from his son, Havoc, who, we can only assume, was very adept at earning his namesake. We here at the funeral home also applaud Havoc’s middle name choice of Osiris, as its origins are steeped Egyptology and the ancient Pharohs. Joel and Havoc were built for each other, and they both really cherished each other’s company. Joel was a huge fishing nut, and it goes without saying that Havoc pretty much inherited his dad’s talent for “wetting a line”. They loved to fish together, and Joel left Havoc with a pretty good inventory of secret “honey holes”!

Joel was a kind and special young man who cared very much for others and tried to fill his life with goodness whenever he could. He loved the freedom of going on long car rides to clear his mind, listening to his music or simply hanging out with his pals, as they brought him happiness, company and friendship. He was also a skilled BMX biker and enjoyed learning how to cook new things.

Friends and family wishing to make a monetary donation in Joel’s memory may do so by donating to Havoc’s future in care of his mother, Brittney Shaffer. Additionally, please be sure to thoroughly browse Joel’s obit page, as you are able to leave condolences and memories, post photographs on his memory wall, and order other funerary items in regard to the family.
