Joan R. (Leatherman) Smeltzer

Joan R. Smeltzer, 89, of Elkhart, passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer’s on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at her home.

Joan was born on May 23, 1933 in Elkhart to the late, Raymond W. Leatherman and Pauline P. (Basse) Leatherman. She was married to the late, Vance O. Smeltzer on November 22, 1958 in Elkhart. He passed away on July 29, 2015.

Joan is survived by her children, Jeffrey Smeltzer and Cherry Nealis; brother, Jack Leatherman and Marylou Reckell; 6 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

Joan was a past member of the Women of the Moose Lodge 599 and Fernwood Botanical Center. She enjoyed painting in her younger years. Joan was a cheerful lady until her health declined.

There will be no services for Joan at this time. The family has chosen cremation. Arrangements are entrusted with Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, IN 46514.
