Jerry Akers Life Story

Mr. Jerry Lee Akers, 78, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at his home with his loving Patty at his side following an extended illness on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020 at 7:06 am.  He was born July 12, 1941 in Charleston, WV to the late Cecil Akers, Sr. and Virginia (Canterbury) Akers Higginbotham, and later married Patricia Ann “Patty” Blough in Elkhart on April 9, 1983.  She survives at home after 36 wonderful years together.

Surviving are sons Jerry L. Akers, Jr. and Bryan Akers; daughters Annette Akers-Starner and Kelly (Brett Struble) Akers; his brother Paul (Vicky) Akers; sister Iris (Elbert) Kemper, and a host of grandchildren, extended family and friends, all who will miss Jerry’s easy-going smile. A son, Craig Akers; a grandson, Bryan C. Akers; brothers Ron and Cecil Akers, Jr. and sisters Gail Zamio and Betty McCibbert all precede Jerry in death.

In accordance with his wishes, Jerry arranged for a simple cremation with no services. Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart have been assisting with these wishes.

Jerry was never one to remain idle for too long. He worked at the Elkhart Rubber Works for over 20 years, then went on to spend another 20 years at EASCO Aluminum, then on to Wells Cargo of Elkhart, where he retired. Jerry was an avid supporter of the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame and was an ardent supporter and enthusiast of the Elkhart Wellfield Botanic Garden.
