Janice "Grandma Subby" (Coovert) Substanley

Janice “Grandma Subby” Substanley, 71, of Elkhart, passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at her home.

Janice Mae Substanley was born on November 19, 1948 to Fred Coovert and Charlotte Randall in Muncie, IN. She married, the late, David Substanley on February 8, 1969. He passed away on December 12, 2000.

Janice is survived by her children, Michelle (Michael) Schade of Elkhart and Mike (Jessica) Substanley of Wakarusa; 5 grandchildren, McKenzie (Austin) Munn, Isabelle Substanley, Coleman Substanley, Mariah Schade and McKenna Schade; 1 great grandson, Asher Munn; brother, David (Diana) Coovert of Ft. Meyers, FL; sisters, Charlene (Ken) Davis of Vandalia and Chris Smith of Flagstaff, AZ.

Janice graduated from Elkhart High School. She worked in the credit department at St. Joseph Valley, Midwest Commerce, NBD, Chase, Bayer and retiring from Inova.  She cherished the many friends she’s made throughout the years of working in the banking industry.

She enjoyed arts and crafts and vegetable gardening. Janice was an avid reader. She was a social person always looking forward to playing Euchre and going to shows and concerts especially The Elkhart Jazz Festival. She was affectionately known as “Grandma Subby” to her grandchildren. Most of all, she looked forward to spending time with her grandchildren and her “special day” with her great grandson, Asher.

Janice’s family will have a Celebration of her Life held on Saturday, September 5, 2020 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Elcona Country Club, 56784 County Road 21, Bristol, IN. Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. Elkhart, IN 46514 is assisting the family.
