James “Jim” L. Hiles, 84, of Goshen, passed away Friday morning, March 6, 2020 at the Center for Hospice Care, Elkhart. He was born on October 8, 1935 in Detroit to the late Wilbur E. and Blanche (Alton) Hiles. On September 1, 1958, he married his true love, Jean L. Otto at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. They built a wonderful life together with their loving children, Kevin Hiles, Greg (Shelly) Hiles, Mark Hiles, Michael (Sharon) Hiles, Sally Jurek, Patrick (Mindy) Hiles, and Dean (Denielle) Hiles. He was a loving and proud grandfather to 9 grandchildren, Emily, Garrett, Alex, Victoria, Luke, Hannah, Parker, Brandy, and Amanda, and 5 great-grandchildren. He also cherished his close relationship with his niece, nephews, and their children.
Preceding him in death are a son Richard Hiles, daughter Anne Hiles Looney, son-in-law Karl Jurek; sisters, Wilma McQuade, Barbara Reneck, Martha Anders, and brothers Wilbur Hiles Jr. and Richard Hiles.
Jim retired from the Bendix Corporation and had also worked as an ironworker. He served in the US Army and the National Guard.
He was a longtime member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and a former member of the Elkhart Knights of Columbus. He was an avid fan of the Cubs and ND Women’s Basketball. He liked to grow roses and enjoyed meeting with the gang for their Sunday morning breakfast club.
Visitation will be held from 3-8 pm Monday at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. Elkhart. A rosary will be prayed.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am Tuesday, with 1 hour calling prior to the mass at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church,1108 S. Main St. Elkhart. Rev. Daniel Niezer will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Vincent Cemetery.
