ELKHART — James V. Conner, 63, of Elkhart, passed away in his residence from an extended illness at 1:34 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012.
He was born in Chicago on June 30, 1949, to the late Oliver Sr. and Carrie (Rayford) Conner.
Also preceding him in death were his son, Derrick Conner; and brothers Gregory, Anthony and Melvin Conner.
He married Lisa Dumas on Nov. 27, 1993, in Elkhart. She survives at home.
Also surviving are his children, Ashley (John) Hill of Elkhart and Deshawn Dumas of Brooklyn, N.Y.; sisters Delores Smith of St. Louis, Mo., Sharon King of Hammond, Denise Conner of Chicago, Deborah Anderson of Springfield, Ill., and Syleast (Dadson) Nderitu of Elkhart; brothers Donnie, Eric, Jeffery, Darryl and Oliver Conner Jr., all of Chicago, and David Conner of California; grandchildren Ashton “Cross” Taylor and Kalaya Hill, both of Elkhart; mother-in-law Bessie Pearl Hackworth; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will take place one hour prior to the 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, funeral at Trinity United Methodist Church West Campus, 400 Mishawaka Ave., Elkhart. Pastor Frank Andrews will officiate.
Burial will follow in Prairie Street Cemetery in Elkhart with the U.S. Army Funeral Honor Guard and Elkhart DAV Post 19 rendering graveside military honors.
James was a welder at Godfrey Marine in Elkhart for over 20 years and was an Army veteran serving in Vietnam as a helicopter door gunner.
