Gary Cook Life Story

Today the world lost a good man, and I lost my husband and best friend.

Gary G. Cook, 80, of Cassopolis, MI, passed away on Friday, November 18, 2022, at his residence, his wife, Rhonda, lovingly by his side. He was born in Elkhart on January 16, 1942, to the late Robert V. and Cecile A. (Weber) Cook.

Gary is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Rhonda (Johnson) Cook and faithful canine companion, Bo; children, Jennifer Lynn, Shawn, and Kim; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; and many wonderful friends. He is preceded in death by his parents.

With great gratitude, the family would like to thank the Stover family for all their help throughout the years and also send a special thank you to Nancy and Bruce for all their wonderful help. Your kindness, friendship, and hard work has been much appreciated during this difficult time.

In accordance with Gary’s wishes, cremation was chosen and will take place at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. in Elkhart. Gary has requested that no services are to take place at this time. Memorial donations may be given to Cass County Animal Control and Shelter, 323 M-62, Cassopolis, MI 49031.

Gary was a hardworking and kind man who lived every moment of his life to the fullest, always with a good sense of humor and a smile on his face. He worked for Conn-Selmer in Elkhart for 32 years as an assembler and chief union steward. After retiring he became self-employed and continued his trade of working on brass and woodwind classical instruments. Gary enjoyed the outdoors and would often find peace there in the woods with Rhonda and Bo by his side. It was there that he felt the presence of a higher power among the trees and wildlife around him, especially during the Fall season.

In his spare time, along with Rhonda, he loved to deer hunt, go fishing, make the best deer sausage and jerky around, test his skills as a trap shooter, and ride ATVs through their 80-acre land. Gary enjoyed spending time with his sister in laws where they would often play Euchre and Uno, as well as the occasional fierce game of Spoons. He also had an affinity for animals, especially the many faithful companions he had by his side throughout the years. Gary will be dearly missed by his loving family and many friends.
