David Himes Life Story

Mr. David Andrew Himes, 51, of Elkhart, was found passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, June 22, 2020 at 6:58 am. He had recently been in ill health. He was born in South Bend on August 30, 1968 and later married Kelly L. (Sites) in Elkhart on Oct. 5, 1989. She survives him at home.

Also surviving are his children Tyler J., Amanda L. and Mandy S. (Kyle Forrester) Himes; grandchildren Carrie A. and Anthony L. Forrester, and a host of loving extended family, friends and work associates who cherished Dave’s memory.

Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart is hosting a Life Celebration Service for David on Monday, June 29, 2020 at 2:00 pm, with visitation and viewing beginning at 12:00 noon. Pastor John Blodgett will officiate and Military Honors will be rendered at the service by the US Army Funeral Honor Guard as well as DAV Post #19 of Elkhart. Cremation will take place after the funeral and burial will follow at Prairie Street Cemetery later in the week.

David had worked at Gunite in Elkhart for many years, but was employed as a shift supervisor at Ramco Engineering in Elkhart at the time of his passing. It was always joked that Dave was a “jack-of-all-trades” because between work and home, there always seemed to be someone who needed something “MacGyvered”, and Dave was the man to call. Supervisor, scheduler, quality controller, worker, and part-time appliance repairman; it made no difference. Dave always wore the hat needed for the job. He was also known as a “tree-hugger” as well by his family because of his devout love for planting trees, especially on Arbor Day. He was also a stock market, investing and trading enthusiast as well as an accomplished automotive mechanic and car show attendee. In fact, He had been working on restoring a 1970 Chevy Nova SS (which was the love of his life next to Kelly) for several years and was within days of revealing his masterpiece to his beloved wife when he passed. It is hoped that his car will be finished and present at the funeral home in time for his services. Finally, Dave was a dedicated father, husband, family man and Christian, and will be best remembered for providing his family a solid and stable life while lavishing his wife and children with his love and affection. Recently, he had expressed his faith in Christ.
