Cristian "Kosmo" Huertas Islas

Mr. Cristian “Kosmo” Huerta Islas, 30, recently of Elkhart and formerly of Sahagun, Hidalgo, Mexico, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, April 8, 2022 at 7:29 am.

Kosmo was born in Hidalgo on October 5, 1991 to the late Asuncion Huerta and Alberta Islas, who survives him in Hidalgo. He is also survived by his brother Juan Aguilar Islas of Hidalgo; sisters Yasmin Aguilar Islas (Alfonso Moreno) and Maria Aguilar Islas (Elias Angeles), both of Elkhart; his nephew Carlos Aoki Aguilar, also of Elkhart, and his aunt Marisol Islas Montiel of Hidalgo. Additionally, Kosmo is survived by a loving host of extended family and good friends.

A Funeral Mass will be held for Cristian on Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at 12:00 noon, with visitation beginning in St. Vincent Hall at 10 am. Fr. Craig Borshard will officiate and cremation will take place following the service with the assistance of Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart. Kosmo’s remains will then be returned to Mexico at a later date.

Kosmo had a bachelor’s degree in business administration and had recently come to the United States to continue the quality education that he was seeking. He had been working as a roofer in his family’s business while earning and saving money for his future. He was a wonderful young man who was always respectful and polite; and would do anything to help others. He was a hard worker but worked equally hard at having fun with his friends once the real work was done for the day. It was very easy for Kosmo to make friends, and his beaming smile and friendly personality was probably the reason for that.

He loved listening to music, going out with friends and spending time with his family. In fact, just before his passing, he took his nieces and nephews out for ice cream. He was an excellent cook, and everyone loved his cochinita and his signature guacamole. He attended St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and loved to watch his soccer teams Cruz Azol and the national team Selection Mexicana
