Carol Dunmire Life Story

Carol Ann Dunmire, of Elkhart, passed away at the age of 86 on January 12, 2022. She had been a resident of The Maples at Waterford Crossing in Goshen for the past two years.

Carol was born on Nov. 8, 1935 to John F. and Edythe (Shigley) Dunmire. She was a member of the Elkhart High School class of 1953 and went on to attend Wichita State University on a music scholarship. Although she held other jobs throughout her life, music was a large part of her life and she taught piano for many years at Witmer McNeese Studio as well as in her own home. She was a voracious reader and a fan of word search puzzles and loved the cats she had as pets through the years. For several years, Carol also enjoyed attending Notre Dame Women’s basketball games with friends and relatives.

A fond memory of her childhood which she recalled often was of walking to the old Elkhart Fire Station No. 2 on S. Main St. after school and spending time with her grandfather Clyde Shigley and the other on-duty firemen who were there at the time. She said they would give her money to walk down the street to Wray’s Ice Cream to get ice cream for them and herself. She said they always watched to be sure she safely crossed the street.

Carol’s formal work life included Elkhart Brass, 29 years at Miles/Bayer (a member of the Quarter-Century Club), and NIBCO until her retirement.

Survivors are cousins, Sandra Metcalf, Nancy (Richard) Moore, Patricia (Ronald) Steele, Grethe Freed, James (Lou) Freed, Larry Ford and Lynn Linn. Those who preceded Carol in death included her parents and Doris Rody, Larry Linn, Thomas Freed and Margo Ford. Carol was a former member of Trinity UMC.
