Mrs. Bertha G. Cox, 92, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully of natural causes at her home on Monday, May 4, 2020 at 9:00 am. She was born November 27, 1927 in Smithfield Township, Indiana to the late Joseph H. and Clara C. (Weloski) Ellert. She later married Clarence A. Cox on September 30, 1950 in Ashley, Indiana. He passed away August 28, 1987.
Surviving are daughters Nancy Shay of Elkhart and Donna Groves of South Bend; sisters Teresa Stanley, Barb Bonds and Rita Roark; brother Ben (Bev) Ellert; grandchildren Chris (Andrea), Joe (Kelly) Pat and Richard (Becky) Shay; Danny, Jerry and Billy (Loree) Dameron; Jerome Cox and Keith and Paula Passmore; sister-in-laws Velma and Doreen Ellert; 23 great grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren and a loving host of extended family and good friends. Preceding Bertha in death are her children Johnathon Cox and Martha Ferm; granddaughter Denise Cox and siblings Marie Blomeke and Carl, James, Clayton, Leonard, Stephen and Irene Ellert
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 1331 N. Main Street, Elkhart on Saturday, May 9, 2020 at 11:00 am, with visitation beginning one hour prior. Father Jason Freiburger will officiate, and burial will follow at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Cemetery in Elkhart. Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart is assisting the family with arrangements.
Bertha was a prolific seamstress. She worked professionally at several area companies including Imperial Fabrics, but she also loved to sew and crochet at home as well. She also was an avid bowler, an excellent baker and a devout member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Indiana Association for the Hearing Impaired, where memorial donations in her name may be sent.
