Alfred "Al" Emery Life Story

Alfred Carl Emery, 97, passed away on Sunday, January 16, 2022 in Elkhart.

Alfred or “Al” as he was known to many, was born on September 23, 1924 in Dunmore, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Oliver Calvin and Ethel May (Myers) Emery. He was the fourth of six children born in the family and the family resided in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania for many years. On October 21, 1951, Al married the love of his life, Marian Pearl Oliver in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania. The couple was married 70 years.

Alfred is survived by his wife, Marian; two sons, Ronald Carl (Lisa) Emery of South Bend and Kevin Al (Chadelyn) Emery of Elkhart; three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Oliver Calvin, Jr., Everett Malcom, Robert Frederick and William, and a sister, Hazel May Goodrich.

Alfred was a 1943 graduate of Waverly High School in Waverly, Pennsylvania. He served in the United States Army as an infantryman in the late 40’s and early 50’s and was stationed at Camp Gordon, Georgia at the time of his discharge. After his marriage, he moved to Binghamton, New York where his two sons were born. In 1968, he moved his family to Elkhart where he worked in the mobile/modular home industry. He later worked in maintenance at McDonalds in Mishawaka.

Al was a long-time member of Bethel Assembly of God Church in Elkhart. His relationship with God was of top importance to him. His family also was of great importance. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren would lovingly refer to him as “Papa”. As hobbies, he enjoyed reading, gardening, woodworking and birdwatching. His woodworking projects included many items for family members, but he was probably most remembered for the wooden doll houses he made for his granddaughters, the wooden fire station he made for his grandson, and the child rocking chairs he made for his great-grandchildren. When gardening or doing other work around the home he could often be heard whistling hymns.

Funeral Services for Al will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, January 24, 2022 at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart with visitation two hours prior to the service from 12:00pm noon to 2:00pm at the funeral home.
