Wilma "Jean"  Smith, 75, of Elkhart, was called to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at the Center for Hospice Care in Elkhart. She was born on March 20, 1948, in Cullman County, Alabama to the late Jessie and Wilma (Hershberger) Holmes. Jean is also preceded in death by her former spouse, Lyle Smith; brothers, Monte Holmes, Howard Holmes, Junior Holmes, and an infant brother; sisters, Maryann Holmes, Mary DeMarco, and Ruth Holmes. She is survived by her two children, Steve (Cindy) Smith and Lorie (Troy) Bowers; grandchildren, Kelly (Kyle) Taylor, Justin (Lydia) Smith, Abigail Bowers, and Hannah Bowers; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Bollinger, Carolyn (Dan) Kincaid, and Rose Bright; sister-in-law, Judy Holmes; and a host of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. in Elkhart. Funeral services will be held at noon with Pastor Troy Bowers of Emmanuel Baptist Church officiating.   A graveside service will immediately follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. She worked for Bayer (formerly Miles Laboratories) for several years. She was very devoted to her faith and if you ever got Jean started on politics and the Book of Revelation, she would passionately tell you all about them. Jean was the caregiver in her family and looked after others with a generous heart. She was a loyal and giving person who enjoyed spending time with friends. Above all else, she loved her children and grandchildren. Jean also loved making each Christmas for her children special. She will be dearly missed.
