Obituary

ELKHART — William Henry "Bill" Baldwin, 95, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully of natural causes, at his home Friday, Aug. 26.

Bill was born Feb. 23, 1921, in Fremont, Neb., to the late George Arthur and June E. (Breitenfeld) Baldwin.

Bill married Elaine M. Hendriksen on Jan. 25, 1948, in Fremont.

Elaine survives, as well as their children, Sharon (Nelson) Hahn of Nappanee, Maralee (Steve) Macumber of Elkhart, Philip (Deb) Baldwin of Keller, Texas, Janene (Mike) Kindy of Goshen and Luke (Lori) Baldwin of Elkhart. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and his sister, Betty Hawkins of Twin Falls, Idaho.

Bill was a graduate of Fremont High School and also attended Midland College.

Before entering the service, he taught Army and Marine radio repair in Omaha. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946. He was a member of the American Expeditionary Forces and Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). He set up and operated broadcast stations for U.S. forces in New Caledonia and Fiji in the South Pacific.  Later he was sent to Hiroshima, Japan, to re-establish radio service. His final assignment was chief engineer for AFRS in Tokyo, Japan.

After returning home, he was a radio engineer and announcer in Fremont and Omaha. He held service positions with C.G. Conn.  In 1960, he became their national service manager and moved to Elkhart.  After retiring from Conn, he became the inventory control manager at Syndicate Systems.

Bill was a loving husband, father and grandpa. He could fix just about anything! He had a great love of music. He was a longtime member of Augustana Lutheran Church.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart.  Services celebrating Bill's life will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, with calling one hour prior at Augustana Lutheran Church, 1133 Kilbourn St., Elkhart. The Rev. Steven Reshan will officiate. Burial will follow in Rice Cemetery, where military honors will be rendered.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorials be given to the Elkhart County Humane Society, 54687 C.R. 19, Bristol, IN 46507 or to Augustana Lutheran Church.
