He was born Sept. 12, 1927, in Oak Park, Ill., to William A. and Viola (McLeod) Anderson. He married Frances L. Smith on June 5, 1954, in North Manchester.
She survives, along with one son, David (Michelle) Anderson of Elkhart; two daughters, Melanie (Jeff) Rank of Elkhart and Nancy (Randy) Vos of Rockford, Mich.; eight grandchildren, Eric Anderson, Crystal Wininger, Jessica Vos, Ravyn Vos, Brandon Bowdoin, Brady Bowdoin, Blake Bowdoin and Britney Rank; one great-grandson, Mikah Wininger; and one sister, Nancy Klinge of Muncie.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Ryan N. Anderson; and an infant brother, James Anderson.
Friends may call one hour prior to Sunday's 2 p.m. memorial service at Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dr. Mark Fenstermacher will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Oakridge Cemetery, Bristol.
Mr. Anderson was a 1950 graduate of Earlham College, earned his master's degree from Ball State University and did post-graduate work at Indiana University South Bend. He retired in 1986 from the Elkhart Community Schools after 36 years of teaching.
He had worked at Aux Chandelles (later Horizon Learning Center) as program director. He also served as an administrator in Long Beach, Calif. He was a baseball and basketball coach in North Liberty, Richmond and Berne, Ind., school systems.
He was a member of Trinity UMC and Indiana Retired Teachers Association. He was a former member of St. Paul's UMC, where he taught Sunday school for 26 years, and Long Beach, Calif., Civitan Club.
