ELKHART -- Willard E. "Bill" Cressler, 88, of Elkhart, passed away at 10:45 p.m. Saturday, May 28, 2011, at East Lake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Elkhart.
He was born Jan. 18, 1923, in Elkhart to Glen Earl and Lucile (Ludington) Cressler. On Jan. 18, 1947, he married Imogene June (Rowe) Cressler in Elkhart, and she survives.
Other survivors include four daughters, Diana Lynn Smoot of Ocala, Fla., Cathy Ann (Robert) Jarvis of Hoffman Estates, Ill., and Laura Kay Abbott and Lisa Christine (Michael) Richardson, all of Elkhart; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Billy Cressler, and a brother, Richard "Dick" Cressler.
Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II and was one of many brave soldiers who landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy during the D-Day Invasion. He retired from Bendix Corporation in South Bend after nearly 30 years of service.
Graveside services will be held at a later date at Plum Grove Cemetery in Union, Mich. Pastor Gary Sheets will officiate.
Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, is in charge of arrangements.
