Mr. Wei-Sen Chu, age 81, of Elkhart, Indiana, passed away peacefully at Elkhart General Hospital on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at 9:32 p.m., following a courageous battle with an extended illness. His beloved wife and dearest companion, Amy, was lovingly by his side, holding his hand as he was gently ushered into rest. Wei-Sen was born in the city of Chongqing, China, to the late Yuan-Mo and Fan Tung Chu. Though born on the Chinese mainland, his spirit and identity were deeply rooted in the heart of Taiwan, which he held close with reverence and pride throughout his life. Taiwan remained not only a place of origin for Wei-Sen, but a cherished symbol of cultural richness, memory, and deep familial connection. At the center of Wei-Sen's life was his treasured wife, Amy. Together, the two of them forged a quiet, profound love story—one of deep devotion, laughter, mutual respect, and unwavering companionship. Though they never had children, their life together was richly fulfilled through each other's presence. As Amy often shared with a smile, "We didn't need the world—we were the world to each other." Their love was not loud, but it was deep and enduring, a testament to the quiet power of soulmates walking life's path hand-in-hand. Wei-Sen was a man of extraordinary intellect and professional accomplishment. He received his Bachelor degree in Agricultural Chemistry from Taiwan National Chung-Hsing University in 1967. After his short teaching career in Taiwan, Wei-Sen came to the United States in 1971 to study for his master degree at University of Maryland, College Park. Wei-Sen and his wife, Amy moved to Indiana in 1984. They both worked for Miles Laboratories/Ames Division, a company that later became Bayer Healthcare. Wei-Sen retired from Bayer Healthcare-Diabetes Care Division in 2010. During his tenure with Miles Laboratories and Bayer Healthcare, he worked at both Quality Control and Manufacturing divisions. With his extensive experience and knowledge in both areas, he served as core team members for numerous product development projects. This included Digoxin and carbamazepine dry-reagent strips for Ames Seralyzer reflectance photometers, Glucostix test strips for Ames glucometers, and blood Hemoglobin A1C and urinary Microalbumin/Creatinine reagents for DCA2000 analyzer. He also worked in product support team, where he developed SOPs, troubleshot issues, and implemented continuous manufacturing process improvements. While many of us may not grasp the full technical scope of his work, there is no doubt that his contributions helped improve countless lives across the globe. After retiring in 2010, Wei-Sen embraced his well-earned freedom with an insatiable love for travel. His passport told the story of a man who longed to not just see the world but to truly understand it. Whether wandering through ancient streets, sharing meals in tiny cafes, or quietly observing a sunrise over foreign hills, Wei-Sen immersed himself in the cultures and traditions of others with humility and wonder. At home, Wei-Sen was a man of peace and introspection. He found comfort in the quiet cadence of a good book and the rich, soulful strains of classical cello music. He was never one to seek the spotlight, but his presence radiated a calm strength, quiet humor, and thoughtful wisdom that drew people in. He valued sincerity over ceremony, kindness over recognition, and curiosity over comfort. Wei-Sen leaves behind a legacy of love, intellect, and quiet dignity. He is survived by his loving brothers, Gen Sen Chu and his wife Dorothy of Cromwell, Connecticut, and Mien-Sen Chu and his wife Chen-Hua
of Glenview, Illinois. He is also remembered with deep affection by a wide circle of extended family, cherished friends, former colleagues, and kind-hearted neighbors who stood by Wei-Sen and Amy with steadfast support and compassion throughout his illness. Their love did not go unnoticed and remains a comfort to the family. The family private service was held on 6/28/25. In accordance with family wishes, cremation will take place at a later date, and there will be no memorial service or celebration of life. Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart have been entrusted with arrangements. Though Wei-Sen has departed this earthly life, his legacy will live on—in the life-saving advancements he helped bring into the world, in the love he shared with Amy, and in the memories of every heart he touched with his gentle and generous spirit. He taught us that a life well-lived is not one that is measured in applause or accolades, but in love given freely, knowledge humbly shared, and a spirit that remains forever curious. May he now find eternal peace, wrapped in the warmth of the love he gave so freely and the music he so dearly loved.
