ELKHART -- Wayne E. Martin, 89, of Elkhart, formerly of Shavehead Lake, Vandalia, Mich., died at 9:05 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 15, 2010) in Greenleaf Living Center in Elkhart of natural causes.
He was born Dec. 24, 1920, in Elkhart County to Albert and Mable (Smith) Martin. He married Jean Phillips on April 14, 1946, in Elkhart. She died March 28, 2006, in Elkhart.
He is survived by four sons, Ronald (Angel) Martin of Goodyear, Ariz., Randall (Janis) Martin of Bristol, Brent (Karen) Martin of Goshen and Brad (Rosemary) Martin of Vandalia; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Marijane (Paul) Zipser of Elkhart, Joan (Wayne) Gongwer of Goshen and Donna J. Timpe of Elkhart; and one brother, Doyle (Jeannine) Martin of Elkhart.
Wayne was preceded in death by one sister, Phyllis Jean Harter, and one brother, Dale Martin.
Wayne was a self-employed masonry contractor for many years. He built more than a dozen spec houses and did masonry work on various church buildings in the area. He was a former member of Simpson UMC until its closing and then Dunlap United Methodist Church until becoming a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Goshen. Wayne was in the first graduating class (1939) at Concord High School to go all 12 years. He enjoyed boating and sailing with his dog on Shavehead Lake in Vandalia, where he lived for many years until moving to Elkhart.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Aug. 18, 2010, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Friends may call one hour prior to Thursday's 10 a.m. celebration service at the funeral home. The Rev. Larry Kurtz of Faith United Methodist Church will officiate. A graveside service and burial will follow in Prairie Street Cemetery.
