WHITE PIGEON, Mich. -- Virgil Lewis Darkwood, 89, of White Pigeon, passed away at 11:35 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010, in Elkhart General Hospital.
He was born Oct. 5, 1920, in Gary, Ind., to Benjamin F. and Clara Schumacker Darkwood.
He was a 1940 graduate of Rochester High School. On May 8, 1993, he married Edith V. (Haney) Darkwood in Elkhart.
She survives along with a daughter, Lou (Marvin) Anderson of Indianapolis, Ind.; four sons, Wayne (Darlene) Haney of White Pigeon, Lamar (Linda) Haney of Cullowhee, N.C., Guy (Jane) Haney of Orland, Maine, and Robert Darkwood of Pittsburgh, Pa.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a former wife, Hazel F. Darkwood, and two sisters, Louise Ruth Myers and Grace E. Decker.
Virgil served in the United States Army during World War II, where he was stationed overseas in the Philippines. He later worked as a heavy equipment mechanic in the Chicago area for several years.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. A funeral service will be Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010, at 11 a.m., also at Billings Funeral Home. Pastor Catherine Koziatek of Bethel United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will follow in Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery, Kewanna, Ind.
