Obituary

ELKHART -- Velma Ruth "Ruth" Carrick, 80, of New Castle Drive, died at 7 a.m. Friday (Aug. 31, 2007) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y., of natural causes while visiting a daughter.

She was born June 24, 1927, in Manchester, Tenn., to Lide and Sally (Porch) Vaughn. She married LeRoy N. Carrick Sr. on Feb. 1, 1947, in Elkhart.

He survives along with two daughters, Patricia (Samuel) Maio of Geneva, N.Y., and Wilma Jane (Tom) Wills of Hotchkiss, Colo.; one son, LeRoy N. (Anita) Carrick Jr. of Elkhart; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, W.C. and S.L. "Whitey" Vaughn; and one granddaughter, Rachel "Shelly" Carrick.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at North Side Baptist Church in Elkhart, with visitation one hour prior. Pastor Carl Henry will officiate and burial will follow at Prairie Street Cemetery.

Mrs. Carrick worked as a silver solderer at Vincent Bach in Elkhart for more than 20 years before retiring in 1990. She was a member of the VFW Ladies' Auxiliary 898 in Goshen and the North Side Baptist Church. She was a prolific sewer, knitter and crochetter, always making things for friends, family and newborn babies in the church. She enjoyed spending time with friends and family and working in her flower and vegetable gardens.
