ELKHART -- Tristan A. Guffey Charlwood, 15, of Elkhart, passed away at 10:40 a.m. Friday, April 22, 2011, at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo from injuries received during a fire at his home.

He was born in Elkhart on June 19, 1995, and is survived by his parents, Cory Willis and Tasha R. (Guffey) Charlwood.

Also surviving are grandparents Duane (Sue) Guffey of Cassopolis, Mich., Greg (Pamela) Jenkins of Luna Pier, Mich., Ken (Sue Charlwood) Hershberger of Elkhart and Don (Helga) Charlwood of Rome, Ga.; and his uncles and aunts Corey Lamb of Anaheim, Calif., Chris (Bethany) Charlwood of Goshen, and Chris (Cassie) Guffey, Scott (Kerri) Charlwood, Chad (Amy) Charlwood, Cara Hershberger and Mike (Dryscha) Hershberger, all of Elkhart.

A celebration of Tristan's life will take place from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 28, 2011, at Billings Funeral Home in Elkhart. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Friday, April 29, 2011, at Faith United Methodist Church, 22045 C.R. 18, Goshen. Pastor Frank Ramirez of Everett Church of the Brethren in Everett, Pa., will officiate. Burial will take place in Prairie Street Cemetery in Elkhart.

Tristan was attending Elkhart Central High School as a freshman and worked as a volunteer for several area outreach programs, including Feed The Children, Church Community Services and LoveWay, where he also rode horses. He was an avid animal lover and enjoyed visiting area zoos, collecting pictures of dinosaurs and playing with his two cats, Mimzy and Squeakers, who, sadly, are believed to have perished in the same fire that took Tristan's life.

He was an active youth and was involved in the local Special Olympics, where he played basketball. Other interests included playing video and computer games, swimming, playing with his Transformers, Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh characters, reading about his favorite comic book superheroes, collecting cartoon DVDs from the 1980s and attending Concord football games, where he was a founding member of the "Concord Cow Bell Club." At home, he could always be found helping out around the house, working in the family's garden or entertaining his cousins when they would come over to visit.

Because of the great loss suffered by the family during the house fire, it is asked that donations made in Tristan's memory be given to his mother, Tasha.
