Obituary

ELKHART — Thomas Joe "Tom" Van Winkle, 70, of Elkhart, passed away at his home Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Tom was born Jan. 2, 1946, in Goshen, to the late Clyde and Josephine (Torrance) Van Winkle.

Tom married Sue Ann (Wilfret) on Oct. 1, 1977, in Elkhart. She died Oct. 22, 2009. Also his daughter, Tammy Evans preceded him in death this year.

Surviving are a son, Rick A. (Melissa) Baney of Conway, Ark.; three grandchildren, Taylor, Alexander and Emily Baney; siblings, Judith Lee (Steve) Fawley of Texas, Jim (Betty) Van Winkle and Mary Lou (Ted) Sprunger, both of Bluffton.

Tom worked in the warehouse at Pionite for 35 years.

He was a member of the Elkhart Moose Lodge and was a huge Chicago Cubs, Bears and Bulls fan.

Tom was also an avid bowler and loved to play euchre.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1966 until his honorable discharge in 1969.

Friends may call one hour prior to the 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, celebration of life service at the Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St.

Pastor Dave Lade will officiate. The service will conclude with military honors by the U.S. Army funeral Honor Guard.

Cremation will follow services, with placement of his cremated remains with his wife, Sue Ann, in Rice Cemetery at later date.

Memorials may be given to United Cancer Services of Elkhart County.
