Obituary

Thomas "Tom" Earl Spesshardt, 92, of Edwardsburg, MI, passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at Greenleaf Health Campus in Elkhart, IN. He was born on August 10, 1931, in Elkhart to the late Earl Ervin and Pearl M. (Hafer) Spesshardt. He was a graduate of Elkhart High School, class of 1950.

Tom was also preceded in death by his sister, Jean (Bob) McClane. He is survived by his son, Brant (Heather) Spesshardt; grandsons, Quinn, Holden, and Fletcher; special friend, June Keyser; brother, Richard "Dick" (Virginia) Spesshardt; sister, Joan (Tom) Smith; and many nieces and nephews in the Michigan/Indiana area.

Friends and family are called to gather for a visitation on Sunday, February 4th from 1pm to 2pm with Military and Masonic services to begin at 2pm at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. in Elkhart.

Tom was a hardworking, independent man who worked as a Locomotive Engineer for 43 years. He started his career with New York Central Railroad and retired from Conrail. He served proudly in the United States Navy for four years on the USS Benington (CVA 20). Tom enjoyed sharing stories of his time on the railroad, in the Navy and about his life with his son and grandsons. He said he loved his family and loved his work…"what could be greater". In his spare time, he enjoyed playing golf, fishing, playing the organ, watching Cleveland baseball and making incredible Concord Grape wine. Tom was also a member of the Kane Masonic Lodge in Elkhart, The American Legion and the VFW. He will be dearly missed by his loving family.
