ELKHART — Thomas E. "Tom" Nusbaum, 87, of Elkhart, passed away early Wednesday morning, Aug. 19, in his residence.
Tom was born April 3, 1928, in Lake County, and was the adopted son of the late Warren R. and Esther N. (Kegg) Nusbaum.
On Dec. 30, 1950, he married the love of his life, Mary E. (Whiteis) in Alexandria, La. She died Nov. 2, 2007.
Survivors include two sons, Timothy (Phyllis) Nusbaum and Todd (Debbie) Nusbaum, both of Elkhart; four grandchildren, Megan (Sean) Ryan, Troy (Cherie) Nusbaum and Ross Nusbaum, all of Elkhart, and Derek Nusbaum of Chicago; four great-grandchildren; two nephews; and one niece.
Tom proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, from 1950 until his honorable discharge in 1952.
He was the owner and president of Exacto Products Inc., and co-owner of Wire Design. Tom attended Hillsdale College, where he was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity.
Tom liked woodworking and traveling. He and Mary wintered in Tucson, Ariz., for many years. Tom enjoyed good food and good friends.
Services celebrating Tom's life will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, where friends may gather from 11 a.m. until the service time. Pastor Gary Sheets will officiate. In keeping with Tom's wishes, cremation has taken place. Private burial will be at a later date in Rice Cemetery.
