MIDDLEBURY — Thelma E. Burner, 97, of Middlebury, passed away Wednesday, March 18, at Courtyard Health Care Center in Goshen.
She was born April 4, 1917, in Darwin, Va., to Creed F. and Tettea (Vanover) Layne.
Survivors include a son, Don (Lois) Mullins of Middlebury; daughter Betty (Richard) Kruse of Edmond, Okla.; brother Rutherford Layne of Kingsport, Tenn.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Burner; sons Freddie Mullins and Roger Mullins; and brothers Carl, Thurston, Linden, Clayton and Claude Layne.
Thelma was a manager at Johnson's Five and Dime Store in Clintwood, Va., for many years prior to retiring.
She enjoyed being a wonderful homemaker, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren.
Visitation will be two hours prior to the 3 p.m. Sunday, March 22, funeral service at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. The Rev. Robert VanKempen of St. Mary of the Annunciation Catholic Church will officiate. Burial of her cremated remains will be at a later date in Layne Cemetery in Lick Fork, Va.
