Superintendent James W. Andrews, Jr., 74, Pastor of Greater Wayside Temple Church of God in Christ of Elkhart, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, December 16, 2024, at Center for Hospice Care's Esther House in Elkhart. Superintendent Andrews was born on January 28, 1950, in Blytheville, AR, to the late James W. and Esther Mae (Reed) Andrews, Sr. On June 23rd, 1979, Superintendent Andrews married the love of his life, Kathy K. Massey, in Elkhart. Lady K survives at home as the church's First Lady.
Besides his loving wife of 45 years, Superintendent Andrews is survived by his daughters Angie (Kyle) Torain of Orland Park, Illinois; LaTosha (William) Bonds of Elkhart, Jennifer (Darnell Hunt) Andrews of Elkhart, and Kassandra (Marquise) Fuqua of Indianapolis, his son Todd E. Massey of Elkhart; grandchildren Kaylyn Torain of Huntington, West Virginia, Marche Massey of Indianapolis, Amari Torain of Orland Park, Mikayla Andrews of Elkhart, Addison Torain of Orland Park, Camden Bonds of Elkhart and Elijah and Bryson Fuqua, both of Indianapolis; great-grandchildren Dreshon, Donica, Chelynn and Religh Massey, an Aunt Ruthie Mae Reed of Detroit, MI, a bonus sister Mary M. Collins-Mack, a bonus brother Deacon Lee Harris, brothers and sisters in love, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, extended family, friends, Assistant Pastor Donnie R. Massey and the Greater Wayside Temple church family, as well as his faithful golden doodle "Comet" and his grandpup "Deogie", neither of which could be reached for comment.
In addition to his parents and grandparents, Superintendent Andrews was preceded in death by his sister, Madie Ann Andrews, aunts, and uncles.
Services for Superintendent Andrews will be held over the course of two days: Thursday, December 26, 2024, and Friday, December 27, 2024. On Thursday, Superintendent Andrews will lie in state at Greater Wayside Tempe Church of God in Christ, 638 Goshen Avenue, Elkhart, from 5:00-7:00 pm. On Friday, Superintendent Andrews's remains will be moved to the New Vision of Life Church, 400 West Mishawaka Road, Elkhart, for a brief viewing and homegoing service beginning at 11:00 am, with the viewing starting at 10. Assistant Superintendent Lee Ross, Sr., and Bishop Carl J. Steen Jr. will officiate the services, and burial will follow at Prairie Street Cemetery, with military honors being rendered by the US Army Funeral Honor Guard and the Elkhart Veteran's Funeral Honor Guard. Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart have been entrusted with the assistance in arranging Pastor Andrews' services.
Superintendent Andrews attended Malcolm X Junior College in Chicago, IL, and worked as a quality control technician for Gunite in Elkhart for over 30 years. He also proudly and honorably served in the US Army during the Vietnam War, receiving the prestigious Purple Heart after receiving wounds in combat.
In 1979, Superintendent Andrews joined the Greater Wayside Temple COGIC family under Pastor Dr. Leonard Brooks Jr. He was deeply devoted to his love for Christ, serving in many capacities of the church, most notably his service to the Sunday School Department, and later elevated to Assistant Pastor. On January 28, 2006, Bishop Milton L. Hall, Sr., appointed Superintendent Andrews as Pastor of Greater Wayside, a true honor he held near and dear to his heart. Furthermore, on March 23, 2014, Superintendent Andrews was appointed as Superintendent of the E.A. McNeely District and later as Administrative Assistant for Historic Indiana's First Jurisdiction. Overall, Superintendent Andrews was proud to serve his community in a meaningful and impactful way by bringing the love of the Lord to all those he encountered.
In his spare time, Superintendent Andrews enjoyed Westerns and the Old West, was an avid reader, and loved to cook and watch cooking shows. His spaghetti and chicken broccoli alfredo were family favorites, and he always made steak and shrimp on Valentine's Day.
Superintendent Andrews will best be remembered as a loving and loyal husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, friend, and servant. He, along with all the love and joy he shared, will be dearly missed by those whose hearts he touched throughout his extraordinary life.
