IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Suellen "Sue"
(Field) Geyer
March 17, 1940 – June 16, 2023
Mrs. Suellen Geyer RN (Sue) passed away on June 16, 2023, at home.
Sue was born to Glen Field and Elnora Robinson on March 17th, 1940 in Goshen IN. Sue had no brothers or sisters, but there were numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Her paternal grandfather, Harvey Field, was the long time owner and editor of the Nappanee Advance News, paper. Sue's parents and grandparents preceded her in death.
Sue married David Geyer, her high school neighbor and sweetheart, on December 2nd, 1960, at the Church of the Brethren in Nappanee. The couple was married for 63 years. Sue was the devoted Mother to three daughters; Polly Corpe (Tim), of Granger, Loralee Bentley (Pete) of Noblesville, and Sara Jackowiak (Mike) of Elkhart. In addition to her three daughters Sue was the grandmother of nine grandchildren; Emily Zitkus (Casey), Nick Corpe (Jamie), Zack Corpe (Rachael) all of Elkhart, Amanda Beckham (Ryan) of Fishers, Shelby Miller (Josh) of Indianapolis, Megan McCannon (Matt) of Westfield, Austin Bentley (Jenna) of McCordsville, Madeline Hanes (Vince) of Union, Michigan and Ryan Jackowiak of Indianapolis. Sue also had twelve great grandchildren. It was the family that gave Sue her greatest satisfaction and joy in her life and she learned so much from each of them.
She was a 1958 graduate of Nappanee High School, she graduated from the Parkview Hospital School of Nursing (RN), and Sue earned a Bachelor's Degree from the college of St. Francis and a Masters Degree from Indiana University South Bend.
Sue was employed as an office nurse, a hospital nurse at Elkhart General and as a school nurse for Elkhart Community Schools. After seventeen years, as an elementary school nurse, she began teaching CNA classes and served as a school counselor for twelve years before retiring from the Elkhart Area Career Center. During her years as a teacher and counselor she was very instrumental in starting the Teen Age Parent Program for Elkhart Community Schools and was a district coordinator for Indiana's Gender Equity program. Through the Gender Equity Program Sue continually encouraged young girls to enter into jobs which were considered to be non-traditional jobs for females.
One of her well known phrases known by both her students and her grandchildren was, "Watch out world here I come".
After retiring, Sue volunteered at the Elkhart County Women's Shelter and St. Paul's Methodist Church. Sue would like everyone whom she worked with to know that she appreciated their kindness as well as their friendship.
In Lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to Saving Grace at St. Paul's United Methodist church, Elkhart.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, from 3-7 p.m. at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. in Elkhart. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with visitation starting at 10:30 a.m.
