Stuart "Stu" Herbert, 70, a lifelong resident of Elkhart and dedicated public servant, passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 leaving behind a legacy of service, humor, and a deep love for his family and canine companions.

Born in Newburgh, NY and moved to Elkhart in 1973. Stu graduated from Elkhart Central High School in 1973. Driven by a desire to serve his community, he immediately entered the Elkhart City Police Department as a police cadet. After completing the police academy, he dedicated 30 years of his life to the department, serving faithfully as a K9 police officer from 1981 until his retirement in 2011. Following his distinguished career in law enforcement, Stu shared his expertise with the community while working at the Midwest Gun Exchange.

Stu was known as an easygoing, quiet man with a famously dry sense of humor. He was happiest when spending quality time with his family and close friends. Outside of his professional life, he was a passionate enthusiast of classic muscle cars and had an enduring devotion to dogs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Stuart Herbert and Dolores Ann “Laurie” (Roscoe) Herbert.

Also preceded in death his loyal K9 partners who stood faithfully by his side, Rambo, Duke and Pax, as well as his beloved family dogs, Max and Arko.

Stu is survived by his devoted brothers, Kevin (Donna) Herbert of Bloomington, IN, and Brian Herbert of San Francisco, CA; his cherished nieces, Amanda and Paige Herbert; his nephew, Sam Herbert.

A sincere thank you goes out to his Fraternal Brotherhood of Police Officers, many friends and neighbors who have helped care for and support Stu over the years, and especially in recent days.

Per Stu’s request, there will be a private service and he will be cremated.
