ELKHART — Recently retired Elkhart Police officer Steven L. Stewart, 51, of Elkhart, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Oct. 5, at his home.
Steve was born Sept. 29, 1965, in Elkhart, to Robert D. Stewart and Sharon L. (Weaver) Stewart.
He is survived by a sister, Kara (Michael) Koons of Granger; two brothers, Tom (Patty Geller) Stewart of St. Johns, Mich. and Rob Stewart of Elkhart; nine nieces and nephews; 19 great-nieces and nephews; and his stepmother, Delores Stewart.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Sharon L. Huffman and stepfather Robert J. Huffman and his father, Robert D. Stewart.
Steve was an Elkhart Police officer for 24 years, retiring about a year ago, with the rank of corporal.
He was working at Midwest Gun and Range in Elkhart.
Steve was a 1984 graduate of Elkhart Central High School and attended Ball State University in Muncie.
He was a member of FOP Lodge No. 52 and the NRA. Steve was an avid gun enthusiast. He also enjoyed playing golf and enjoyed all sports.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 2715 E. Jackson Blvd, Elkhart. Services celebrating Steve's life will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, with an additional hour of visitation at 10 a.m. also at Trinity United Methodist Church.
Jim Bontrager, chaplain with the Elkhart Police Department will officiate. Burial will follow in Prairie Street Cemetery, where final honors will be rendered by the Elkhart Police Department Honor Guard.
Memorials in Steve's memory may be made to "Shop with a Cop" or Elkhart Police Department K-9 Unit.
