Steven S. Steve Smale, 71, of Warsaw, IN passed away on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at his residence. He was born on June 8, 1949 in Bremen, IN to the late Charles Leroy & Paula Elaine (Troutwine) Smale. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Larry South.

Steve was very active with ABATE Indiana, Inc.  (American Bikers Aimed Toward Education) and was a member of Brothers of the Third Wheel Trikers as a "motocycle enthusiast". He became known as "Pegleg" to his fellow riders and others. He played online golf around the virtual world where he kept very good ranking. He enjoyed his cars, especially his favorite red Mazda Miata convertible, some trucks and Toyota's. In his youth at Eagle Lake in Michigan, he enjoyed many youthful athleticisms and was an exceptional water skier and swimmer.

He grew up in Edwardsburg, MI, graduated in 1968 from Edwardsburg High School, and was a United States Navy veteran. A motorcycle accident caused the loss of his leg which ended his service time. He lived in Elkhart for several years before moving to Warsaw and retired from the Warsaw Postal Service in 2010. He was also a longstanding member of the American Legion in Warsaw.

He is survived by two sons, Steven "Scott" (Roni) Smale Jr. of Mishawaka and Adam (Kylie) Smale of Elkhart; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; mother, Paula Dailey of Elkhart; two sisters, Shelley (Frank) McCarthy of Aptos, CA and Connie Kujawa of Vandalia, MI; three brothers, Fred Smale of Ft. Collings, CO, Tim (Darlyn) Smale of Elkhart, and Greg (Rita) Smale of Citra, FL.

A celebration of life service will be held on August 19, 2021 at noon with Minister Chris Reno officiating at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. in Elkhart with military honors to be performed. Visitation will be held from 11-12 p.m. prior to the service and from 1-2 p.m. following the service. Memorial donations may be given to the Willowdale Church of Christ and to American Legion.
