Shirley received her bachelor's in nursing and was a licensed Registered Nurse for many years. In 1984, she, alongside Dave, started their own company called Adams & Adams Corp. They specialized in financial consulting regarding federal government employee benefits and did so for many years. The pair were also active members of the Great Plains Bass Circuit, participating in many fishing tournaments and other outings over the years.

In her spare time, Shirley adored spending time with family, with many nights involving games of Yahtzee, Scrabble, or Poker. She also was looking forward to Thanksgiving, being able to share memories with her loved ones and cook some delicious dishes for the occasion, as she loved to cook and bake.
