GOSHEN -- Shirley Rae Roberts, 76, of Goshen, formerly of Bristol, passed away peacefully at 8:20 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2011) at Greencroft Health Care, Goshen, after an extended illness.

She was born Nov. 16, 1934, in Bristol, to Ray and Beatrice (Strawser) Mattix. She later married William E. "Bill" Roberts on May 10, 1991, in Elkhart, where he passed away Dec. 17, 2007.

Surviving are a son, Jeffry D. (Deb) Moore of Union, Mich.; two daughters, Melody (Tom) Overton and Kathleen Stemm, both of Elkhart; and two sisters, Eloise (Pete) Peters of Lawton, Utah, and Janet Normand of Placquemine, La. Also surviving are an adopted brother and sister, Carl and Susan; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Bare.

Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart is hosting a celebration of Shirley's life at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 31, 2011, followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. Burial will then take place in Oakridge Cemetery, Bristol. Pastor Mike Quirey of Grace Baptist Church, Bristol, and Pastor Ronald G. Sherck II of Greenville Church of the Brethren, Ohio, will officiate.

Shirley was a 1952 graduate of Bristol High School and was a member of Grace Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School classes for many years. She was a homemaker and horse enthusiast who loved to knit and crochet, read, write poetry and work crossword puzzles.
