Mrs. Shirley R. “Renea” Covington, 56, of Elkhart, Indiana, passed away peacefully at Eastlake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center with her faithful and loving family gathered closely by her side on Friday, June 5, 2026, at 1:09 p.m., following an extended illness. Though her family’s hearts are heavy in her absence, they take comfort in knowing that Renea’s life was one filled with laughter, love, adventure, and an unwavering devotion to the people she cherished most.

Born in Elkhart on April 6, 1970, Renea was the daughter of the late Larry Hayes and Betty Lois (Cavender) Utt. Life later brought her a true companion and best friend when she married Ronald W. “Ron” Covington in Goshen on April 6, 2019 — fittingly, on her birthday, because anyone who knew Renea understood that she believed life’s best moments were meant to be celebrated loudly and joyfully. Ron survives her at home and will forever carry with him the countless memories of road trips, laughter-filled evenings, and the deep, steady love they shared.

Along with her parents, Renea was preceded in death by her stepfather, Robert L. “Bob” Utt, and her sister, Michelle R. Smith.

Left to honor and cherish her memory are her beloved children: Jeremy M. Taylor and Joshua W. Miles, both of Elkhart, and Sara R. Taylor of Goshen. Nothing in this world mattered more to Renea than being a mother. She wore the title proudly and wholeheartedly. Whether she was cheering from the sidelines at ballgames, planning family outings, offering advice whether anyone asked for it or not, or simply making sure everyone had enough to eat, her children always knew exactly where home was — it was wherever Mom happened to be.

Her greatest joy in recent years, however, came from becoming “Mimi” to her precious grandchildren: Dallas W. Miles, Wesley J. Evans, and Lincoln H. Evans. Those three little boys were the absolute center of her universe. Mimi was never one to say “no” to an extra snack, a surprise toy, or one more ride around the neighborhood on her mobility scooter. In fact, her grandchildren quickly learned that riding with Mimi usually meant two things: adventure and treats. She spoiled them endlessly, and she did so with great pride and absolutely no apologies. To them, she was larger than life — fun-loving, fearless, and always ready to make another memory.

Renea is also survived by her brothers Larry J. “Jack” (Tina) Hayes of South Bend, Edward C. (Tracy) Hayes of Bristol, Troy A. (Jamie) Lantz of Durham, North Carolina, and Heath R. (Crystal) Utt and Ryan D. (Jennifer) Lantz, both of Elkhart; her sister Duwana (Randy) Bivins of South Bend; her Aunt Fay (Dave) Wiseman and Uncle LaMar (Barb) Cavender, both of Nappanee, and her stepmother Jan Hayes of Elkhart, along with a large and loving circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, dear friends, neighbors, and all those lucky enough to have shared in her laughter and friendship over the years.

Renea spent much of her career working in final finishing, graphics, and quality control throughout the local RV industry. She took pride in her work ethic and appreciated the friendships she made along the way. But if asked what truly defined her life, the answer would never have been found in a job title. Her heart belonged to her family and to the countless moments spent together — cookouts that lasted long after sunset, camping trips filled with stories and laughter, family vacations, amusement parks, softball games, and spontaneous drives around town with the radio turned up to classic Rock and Roll.

She especially loved trips to Cedar Point, where her fearless side came alive. While others hesitated at the sight of towering rollercoasters, Renea was often the one leading the charge toward the biggest, fastest ride in the park. She lived much of her life that same way — brave, spirited, and determined to squeeze every ounce of joy out of every day she was given.

Renea also loved motorcycles, casinos, traveling with family, and reminiscing about the adventures she enjoyed growing up with her grandparents. She had a gift for gathering people together and making ordinary days feel special. Holidays, birthdays, family dinners, or random weekend cookouts somehow became events when Renea was involved. She simply loved being surrounded by the people she cared about.

Though she was not formally affiliated with a church, Renea had long ago opened her heart to Christ and carried that quiet faith with her throughout her life. Her family finds peace in knowing she is now free from pain and resting in eternal comfort and love.

In accordance with her wishes, services will be held at Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at 12:00 noon, with visitation beginning there at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Tony Brinson of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church will officiate, and burial will follow at Elkhart Prairie Cemetery on Kercher Road at CR 27 in Goshen.

Though her earthly journey ended far too soon, Renea leaves behind a legacy that will continue through every shared laugh, every family gathering, every rollercoaster ride, and every grandchild spoiled just a little too much. Her love was loud, unconditional, and unforgettable — and those who loved her will carry that love forward for the rest of their lives.
