July 4, 1944 - Sept. 20, 2011

ELKHART — Sherman Kay Poole, 67, residing in Elkhart, passed away Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 20, 2011, at Memorial Hospital of South Bend.

He was born July 4, 1944, in Wabash to Gerald and Icle Virginia (Clark) Singleton Poole. He married Sharon A. Denaway on June 14, 2003, in Elkhart.

She survives, along with a son, Aaron Poole of Granger; daughter Sara (Jevon) Wood of Noblesville; stepson Matthew (Kimberly) Denaway of Granger; and stepdaughter Andrea Vincenski of Spring, Texas. Surviving as well are six grandchildren, Rosie, Amara, Simon, Gavin, Addison and Brendon; brother Jerry (Phyllis) Poole of Nashville, Tenn.; sister Mary (Everett) Tisdale of Wabash; and sister-in-law Janet Poole of Wabash.

Preceding him in death were his parents, stepfather Ruskin Singleton, brother Gary Poole and grandson Mason Robert Poole.

Sherman worked for 28 years at the Defense Logistics Agency and served for 34 years in the Armed Forces with the United States Navy during Vietnam and then with the United States Air Force. He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and worked at the school for many years. He was a Notre Dame fan and a member of the Elkhart Moose Lodge, VFW Post 88, Knights of Columbus Council 1043 and the Gold Wing Riders Association.

He enjoyed cutting wood, antiquing, riding motorcycles, golfing, going to the casino and his 1929 Model A Ford.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, where a parish vigil service will be prayed beginning at 4 p.m. Friends may also call for the half hour prior to the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 1405 N. Main St., Elkhart. The Rev. Bill Sullivan will officiate. Military honors will be rendered at the church following the Mass. At his request, cremation has taken place. Burial will be at a later date in St. Vincent Cemetery.
