IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sheila Irene
(Rookstool) Rowley
April 22, 1949 – April 27, 2025
Sheila Irene Rowley, age 76, of Elkhart, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at 8:55 a.m., surrounded by the familiar comforts of her home, following an extended illness. Her passing marks the conclusion of a life defined by love, generosity, and quiet strength.
Sheila was born in Elkhart on April 22, 1949, to the late Lester A. and Gladys Fay (Overholt) Rookstool. She spent her life rooted in the same community where she was born, a place she dearly loved and helped shape through her kindness and service. On October 7, 1965, she married the love of her life, Leo Eugene Rowley, and together they built a remarkable marriage that spanned nearly 55 years. Their love story was one of deep companionship and laughter, a bond that endured through every season of life until Leo's passing in July 2022.
Sheila was also preceded in death by her daughter, Barbara J. Smock, with whom she shared a lifetime of memories.
Left to cherish her memory are her devoted children: Leo E. Rowley, Jr., Laura Irene Rowley, and Paula K. Hooven, all of Elkhart; her beloved brother Bobby Gene Rookstool, also of Elkhart; and her treasured grandchildren: Joshua J. (JoAnne) Rowley of Chester, Virginia; FF/EMT Aaron Rowley (Desiree) of Michigan; Kelsey Rowley, Alissa Rowley, Dr. Amber Hooven, all of Elkhart; and Spc. Richard Hooven, U.S. Army, stationed in Vilseck, Germany. Sheila was also blessed with 15 great-grandchildren and leaves behind a wide circle of extended family, lifelong friends, and neighbors who became like family—each of whom was touched by her warmth and compassion.
A faithful and hardworking woman, Sheila dedicated nearly three decades to Teacher's Credit Union in Elkhart, where her work ethic and caring spirit left an impression on coworkers and clients alike. Yet, no matter how committed she was to her career, her heart always longed to return home to her dear Leo. Together, they created a home filled with laughter, partnership, and an enduring sense of joy. They were best friends, camping partners, and fierce competitors—especially on the shooting range, where Sheila was known to be a surprisingly skilled and steady marksman.
Sheila had a generous and giving heart. She gave freely of herself, especially when she saw others in need. Her home was a refuge of unconditional love, and her unwavering support was the backbone of her family. She had a remarkable ability to bring people together, to listen without judgment, and to find the good in everyone she met. Her kindness, integrity, and sense of purpose were the threads that held her family close and strong.
In her free time, Sheila found joy in life's simple pleasures. She loved the outdoors—especially camping trips that allowed her to unwind in nature's quiet beauty. She was a talented crocheter, a puzzle enthusiast, and a woman who found peace in creativity and small, meaningful moments.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation will take place with the assistance of Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart. A celebration of Sheila's life will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at 3:00 p.m., with a gathering of family and friends beginning at 2:00 p.m. Pastor Jeremy Sarber will officiate the service, which will be a tribute to a woman whose life was full of love, faith, and enduring grace.
Sheila Irene Rowley will be deeply missed, but her legacy of compassion, strength, and devotion will continue to shine in the lives of those she so dearly loved. Her story will live on in the hearts of her family, and in the many lives she touched simply by being herself.
